Voici le récapitulatif de nos activités de mai.

Notre nouveau projet avec Radio Occitania est maintenant formellement lancé. France Etats-Unis sponsorise une émission de radio hebdomadaire, le dimanche, intitulée “AMERICANA”. “Americana” est à la fois le nom “Amérique” en Occitan, et le mot anglais désignant des particularités de la culture américaine. Notre première émission aura lieu le 7 juin de 10h à 11h. Erica Smith, native de la Louisiane, animera l’émission. Pierre Greene, membre de l’association, s’est porté volontaire pour être formé comme technicien, pour l’émission. Si d’autres membres sont intéressés, si vous voulez intervenir lors de l’émission ou donner des idées de sujets, ou simplement si vous avez envie d’assister à l’enregistrement, faites-le nous savoir !

Le 6 mai, un groupe de 22 personnes a assisté à la conférence organisée par FEU pour l’artiste américain Paul Lorenz, à l’alliance française. Eve Ollier, membre de FEU, a assuré la traduction simultanée. Merci Eve, nous te sommes très reconnaissants d’avoir mis ton talent à notre disposition! L’avantage était double: le public français a pu comprendre les explications de Paul Lorenz sur ses oeuvres, et l’art moderne en général; mais en plus, le public bilingue a eu le plaisir d’entendre ces explications deux fois, pour mieux y réfléchir... L’art et la création artistique sont des sujets difficiles à transmettre. Nous remercions particulièrement la galerie Daniel Vignal pour leur aide, et l’Alliance Française qui a mis sa belle salle de conférences à notre disposition pour cet événement.

Le 8 mai, FEU a été invité par le préfet de la Haute-Garonne à participer, dans la Tribune d’Honneur, à la cérémonie de commémoration de la fin de la guerre, au monument aux morts de Toulouse. Gérard Auday et Felicia Mayne, présidente de France Etats-Unis, ont ensuite déposé des fleurs sur les 5 sites où sont tombés des soldats américains pendant les deux guerres mondiales, à Toulouse et dans les environs.

Le 14 mai, FEU a participé à une réunion avec le Consulat américain, le chef de l’orchestre de Chicago, et un membre du Conservatoire de Toulouse, pour déterminer comment apporter notre soutien à un échange de jeunes étudiants en musique entre Toulouse et Chicago. Le premier échange aura lieu au printemps 2010; les étudiants de Chicago passeront une semaine à Toulouse, pour visiter et répéter avec les étudiants du Conservatoire. FEU prévoit d’organiser deux concerts pour ces jeunes musiciens et d’assurer leur promotion.

Le 28 mai, FEU participera au deuxième forum du Languedoc, au Domaine Verchant, à Castelnau le Lez près de Montpellier. Il s’agit d’un rassemblement de 20 associations anglophones du Languedoc, pour se rencontrer et échanger sur les activités et événements à venir. Nous y échangerons des idées.

Notre énergique Section Jeunes a organisé son Happy Hour mensuel le 14 mai, et une sortie au cinéma pour voir, en anglais bien sûr, “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. La section a aussi organisé une sortie à la pizzeria pour un groupe d’étudiants de Georgia State University, le 19 mai, en collaboration avec l’Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Toulouse. What happened in May?

Our new project with Radio Occitania is formally launched. France Etats-Unis is sponsoring a weekly Sunday radio broadcast called “AMERICANA”. “Americana” is both the name of America in the Occitan language and the word for ‘things peculiar to American culture’ in the English language. Our first broadcast will take place on June 7th from 10 to 11am. Erica Smith, a native of Louisiana, will host. FEU member Pierre Greene has volunteered to be trained as the radio technician. If any other members are interested, if you wish to be on the show or provide subjects, or just see how the whole thing works, let us know.

On May 6th, a group of 22 persons attended the conference sponsored by FEU for American Artist Paul Lorenz at the Allliance Française. Thanks to FEU member, Eve Olllier, the conference was translated live into French! Thanks Eve; we are so grateful for putting your talent at our disposal. It was a double treat: not only did our French attendees understand Paul Lorenz’s explanation his works, and modern art in general but also, the bilingual attendees got to hear the subjects twice and let it sink in… Art and artistic creation are complicated subjects to cover. We give a special thanks to Galerie Daniel Vignal for their help and to Alliance Française for providing us their beautiful conference room on the Place du Capitole for the event.

May 8th, FEU was invited by the Prefet de la Haute Garonne to the Tribune d’Honneur to participate in the Commemoration Ceremony for the end of the war in Europe at the War Memorial, Monument aux Morts , in Toulouse. Gérard Auday and FEU President Felicia Mayne then placed flowers on the five sites of fallen US soldiers from WWI and WWII in and around Toulouse.

May 14th, FEU met with the US Consulate, conductor of the Chicago orchestra and a member of the Conservatoire de Toulouse to see how to support an exchange of young music students between Toulouse and Chicago. The first exchange will take place in Spring 2010 with students from Chicago spending a week in Toulouse, visiting and rehearsing with the Conservatoire students. FEU plans to set up and promote two concerts for these young musicians.

May 28th, FEU will be attending the 2nd Languedoc Forum at the Domaine Verchant, Castelnau le Lez near Montpellier. It is a day when 20 English-speaking associations from the Languedoc come together to meet and discuss their activities and upcoming events. We will meet and exchange ideas.

Our energetic Section Jeunes held their Happy Hour on the 14th and also went the movies to see "Confessions of a Shopaholic" in English, of course! They hosted a pizza outing for a group from Georgia State University on May 19th in coordination with the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce in Toulouse. Go Candice!
